We invite you to the only Lithuanian modern music festival, dedicated to site-specific music, which explores the connection between people, space and the sound environment – “MUZIKA ERDVĖJE”. Starting August 21–September 22.
This year’s festival follows in the physical footsteps of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, which lead through Palanga, Kaunas, Plungė and Vilnius. Places on the map marked by Čiurlionis’ researchers- both concrete and abstract, intriguing or having changed their function entirely- allow for different contexts to bloom, and to create new narratives or think about existing myths from a different perspective.

“When we inevitably chose the theme of Čiurlionis, we decided to dedicate the festival to his journey and to the different abstract and intriguing locations distinguished by researchers, and the contexts surrounding them. Be it the path that Čiurlionis walked with Sofija, interpreted by the artists-partners duo’s ears and hearts, the festive Čiurlionis’ birthday DJ set, a performative sound installation in the railway hangar, the slowed-down echoing sound of Čiurlionis, or be it an experimental reading of a magazine article live on radio. You can find all this and more in this year’s “Muzika erdvėje” ver. 2.0,” explains one of the artistic directors Agnė Matuleviciūtė.
“Working with this topic, especially after the start of all the 150th anniversary celebration events, a lot of research about his life and art started to slowly come out, accompanied by the whispered alternative retellings of events. We got overtaken by this encompassing feeling that Čiurlionis can be simply found everywhere.”
This years’ festival has been inspired by a new voice because our team expanded with new people and new ideas, and from now on “Muzika erdvėje” takes on a new direction. A long-time colleague and friend Marta Finkelštein joins us as artistic director.
Our new artistic director Marta Finkelštein, who joined us this year, adds, “We will try to uncover this topic throughout the month by inviting you not only to listen to Čiurlionis but also to follow him, speak to him, to retell, to hallucinate, to talk about him, and, of course, to celebrate him.”
Our new artistic director duo Marta Finkelštein and Agnė Matulevičiūtė will open the festival by performing the premiere piece together. In Plungės Oginskis Palace, they will introduce their piece titled “Dear Mikalojus”, dedicated to Čiurlionis’ recompositions.

PERFORMERS:
Marta Finkelštein – fortepijonas, Agnė Matulevičiūtė – sintezatoriai
Composer Agnė Matulevičiūtė and pianist Marta Finkelštein started performing as a duet in 2021, when they found fellowship while trying to combine the sounds of a piano and analog/modular synthesizers. Agnė’s field of insterest consists of performing arts, theater, cinema and interdisciplinary projects, and she’s also an active performer under the pseudonym Agnès M. On the other hand, Marta has many years of experience in the creation and performance of modern music. Thus, such different strenghts and backgrounds of both artists, connected by their musical ideas, complement and complete each other. This duet, unrivalled by any other in Lithuania, reveal the various modern expression possibilities, when combining the elements of acoustic and electronic sounds and focusing attention on the expression of keyboard instruments.
The opening concert “Dear Mikalojus” is the dedication from this year festival’s artistic directors to the epicenter that is Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. The artists will engage in an acoustic dialog about Čiurlonis – from very personal childhood associations to autobiographical facts that inspire their music, and even some subtle nods to other compositions present in the festival.

Andreas Trobollowitsch is an Austrian multidisciplinary composer who works with conceptual compositions, performance art, sound and drawing installations. He often uses self-developed musical instruments, modified everyday objects, and plants that are activated by rotation systems, performers, or changing aggregate states (e.g. melting ice) in his art. Interested in the dichotomy of the intellectual and the physical, he incorporates visual aspects, spaces, architecture and movement, paying close attention to timbre, texture and playful practices. using a playful practice that focuses on experimentation and timbre.
The third performance of the festival- “Hybrid”- is a performative sound installation, in which mechanical objects work in tandem with live music and create an organically changing sound environment. The work of Austrian artist Andreas Trobollowitsch reveals the association with M. K. Čiurlionis not through direct references, but through sharing a vision towards artistic expression by combining sound and visuals and taking inspiration from the soundscapes of nature and space.

The fifth “Muzika erdvėje” festival event is a live radio broadcast on “Radio Vilnius”. Another location visited by Čiurlionis was Didžioji g. 20/22, where the famous portrait photo of Čiurlionis was taken in the Photo Atelier of Stanisław Filibert Fleury. Currently, a real estate company is operating in this location.
During the broadcast artistic directors Marta Finkelštein and Agnė Matulevičiūtė will have a discussion with researchers, interpreters and fans of M. K. Čiurlionis, talking about him from different and surprising perspectives. Special attention will be dedicated to the Lithuanian Culture Institute magazine “As a Journal”, which, following the vision of Edvardas Šumila, revealed a new modern vision of Čiurlionis based on the perspectives of researchers and artists.
Throughout the broadcast, “Muzika erdvėje” special guest and artists’ Goda Palekaitė’s writings will take on a new musical form.
A cycle of four visual poems “Hallucinating Čiurlionis” was written at the invitation of Edvardas Šumila, a curator for the magazine “As a Journal”. These poems are a speculative Čiurlionis’ stream of consciousness which reveals some aspects of his chaotic inner world: his synaesthetic way of thinking, intuitive, allusive and exhausting nature of his work, his dreams about the Lithuanian identity and acknowledgement, about his love for Sofija, stuck between the lines of their letters. The poems are created in the form of scattered letters, written using a typewriter, and the words become another example of Čiurlionis’ artistic might. These poems, written by Goda Palenkaitė, will be read in three languages live on the broadcast by Gert van Berckelaer.

The sixth event is dedicated to Čiurlionis and Sofija from an artists’ couple living today. The artists will try to stay close to the comforting atmosphere and the feeling of longing which they found present in Čiurlionis’ letters to Sofija, by recomposing and improvising using both electronic and acoustic tools, hinting to Čiurlionis’ compositions. The event closely follows the Čiurlionis couple whose walks through the Rasu cemetery left their romantic traces around Vilnius.
The inspiration conjured by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis is never-ending. This year we have the opportunity to get to know his art and personality through different forms by listening and performing original compositions, recompositions or improvisations about him. Everyone has their own picture of “who is Čiurlionis”. When we explore Čiurlionis’ personality, we cannot separate his connection with his beloved Sofija, and this passion is best illustrated in his letters to her, which help us understand their dynamic a little more deeply. However, reading these letters, written over a hundred years ago, only lets us speculate about the moods and the feelings present between these lovers.
Writing a letter does not constitute direct communication with said person; when the person is not physically close to us, we communicate with our idea of them we have in our minds, and the idea of letters is a never-ending process which contains within itself the feelings of longing, images and thoughts about the recipient, about the process of writing, about the waiting, about the moment the letter will be read, and about the changing memory.
During the performances, hinting at Čiurlionis’ compositions, we recomposed and improvised by using both electronic and acoustic tools, striving to remain close to the feelings of comfort and longing which are present in the letters.
Mėta Gabrielė Pelegrimaitė-Kaupinė – flautist, who performs in the free improvisation music scene, participates in many different alternative and niche music projects, creates both acoustic and electronic music (“Šalna”, “SNUS”, “Fleitų 3”) and is always looking for the sound of a solo flute.
Simonas Kaupinis – a tuba player, who can be found in alternative, improvised and modern music projects; he’s also a member of ensembles “Synaesthesis”, “Rakija Klezmer Band” and “dr. Green”.

Modern music ensemble “Synaesthesis”
Composer’s Dominykas Digimas (born 1993) musical and sound practice encompasses a wide specter of interests. As well as his academic art, Dominykas is active in the field of sound and performing arts. His works are characterized by asceticism as they are never overloaded with material – they are enveloped in concentration. Dominykas’ art could even be called introverted, because they employ you to dive deep into yourself and submerge you into subjective reflections. The distinctive and ever-lasting melancholy present in Digimas’ music is quite unique, alternating from piece to piece only ever so slightly. This is achieved by using many different tools: sometimes we hear the sounds of the traditional Japanese instrument shō, imitated by an accordion, other times the sound is inspired by the soundscapes of cities and audio-guided walks that carry a feeling of loneliness. This coloring of emotions, which stayed the same ever since the artist found his voice, is common in almost every composition of his.
Edvardas Šumila, music critic and philosopher
“Muzika Erdvėje” together with festival “Audra” present a dedication of sound to Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, from the ensemble “Synaesthesis” and composer Dominykas Digimas, called “Čiurlionis. Slowed and Reverb”. By employing the popular phenomenon “slowed and reverb”, when the sound is slowed and elongated, the iconic “Preliudas d-moll” becomes an ambient soundscape.
“Čiurlionis. Slowed and reverb” is a perspective, which allows us to view his piano compositions under a microscope by compositionally stretching them out and slowing them down to an extreme degree.
The piece was recomposed by composer Dominykas Digimas by employing his unique musical language, which is based on the principle of slow change, when repetitive music motives, performed by one or more musicians, are not performed in the same meter or tempo. The chosen piece for this recomposition was “Preliudas d-moll” (VL239), which was stretched and instrumentally divided between members of the ensemble “Synaesthesis”. However, all the harmonious proportions were authentically retained.
The musical elements are distributed almost like sound objects in the everyday soundscape. This becomes another connection between Čiurlionis’ unique atmosphere, attention to nature and its’ symbolism and Digimas’ thematic field concept which is often based on the deep listening and acute observation of the smallest details in our everyday lives.

Jūra Elena Šedytė – composer and performer, active and often found in electroacoustic, vocal and collective fields of art. Her art is based on multidisciplinary ethics, improvisation as well as the connection between modern and improvised music. Šedytė focuses on the subtle connection between the voice and the electronic side by creating a unique feeling of electronic symphony.
Mindaugas Urbaitis – composer, a professor in the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, and one of the hosts (accompanied by Šarūnas Naku) of the weekly talk show about new music “Modus” on “LRT KLASIKA”. He has composed two ballets (“Acid City” and “Procesas”) as well as orchestral, chamber and choral music, and music for theater, films, and television.
The last, eight, concert asks you: how would we celebrate Čiurlionis’ birthday today? During this anniversary we invite you to our evening program to listen to festive arrangements, which were created for this specific event, made for both vocals and electronics, and will be accompanied by well-wishes from the audience to their loved ones (composer and performer Jūra Elena Šedytė), followed by a DJ set created by Čiurlionis’ recomposition expert Mindaugas Urbaitis.
Before the performance we will invite you to a tour through Vileišis Palace, where the first Lithuanian art exhibition took place in 1906 December 27. It was here that, for the first time, Vilnius saw more than 30 paintings and graphic works of M. K. Čiurlionis.
